Maison de Feu - Village des Éléments

An intimate retreat for two, warmed by its own fire.

Maison de Feu is a 2-bedroom detached house at Village des Éléments, a three-house domain set in 24 hectares of Périgord Pourpre countryside near Naussannes, sleeping four. It is the warmest of the three houses, each built in 2021 and named for a classical element. Russet and amber run through the rooms, the textiles lie heavy underfoot and overhead, a cast-iron wood stove sits at the centre of the sitting room. Lit on a cool evening, it gives the ground floor a gravity that makes leaving feel like the wrong idea.

The house covers 110 m² across two floors. The ground floor holds a kitchen with a combi microwave, a Nespresso machine and a dining table for four; off it sit the single bathroom and a bedroom with two single box springs that configure as twins. Upstairs the structure opens up: original exposed beams frame a loft master bedroom with a 180 by 210 cm box spring, a finished room rather than a converted attic. Air conditioning cools both bedrooms through summer while the stove carries the rest of the year. The detail is the kind that removes small frictions before you notice them: bathrobes, a pillow menu with two types per bed, towels in several sizes, a hotel safe, a washing machine and dryer, a steam iron, a dishwasher.

The private terrace faces open countryside and carries a Bastard kamado, the Dutch-made ceramic grill built for high heat and long cooks. The heated saltwater swimming pool is shared across the three houses, as is Le Papillon, the on-site beauty salon for massages and facials by arrangement. An optional 3-course evening meal can be had for 25 euros per person on request, which on a quiet Tuesday settles the matter of dinner without anyone reaching for the car keys. An EV charging station stands on site.

The villages nearby reward the short drive out. Issigeac, one of the most complete medieval villages in the Périgord, with circular lanes and a Sunday market that draws producers from across the region, is approximately 15 minutes' drive. Eymet, an English-founded bastide with an arcaded square and a weekly market, is approximately 25 minutes' drive. Bergerac, wine capital of its appellation, with an international airport and the old town Edmond Rostand gave to Cyrano, is approximately 35 minutes' drive.

Editor's note

The fire theme here is structural, not a styling note. Maison de Feu is built around its wood stove the way old farmhouses were built around the hearth: the sitting room only resolves with the stove at its centre. Everything else, the russet tones, the heavy textiles, the amber light when the lamps come on, points back to that one source. The restraint is what makes it land. The house earns its name and then stops talking about it.

Two bedrooms for four on 24 hectares is a particular kind of quiet. The loft and the exposed structure above give the place more volume than its footprint suggests, while the shared pool and beauty salon across the domain supply company on the days you want it and nothing on the days you do not. It suits a couple after a base with some room around them, or two friends who would rather have one house than two doors in a corridor. Between the kamado on the terrace and the meal you can order in, dinner tends to answer itself.
